Position: Physiotherapist (PT) Extern

Department:  Various Clinical Areas

Status:  Temporary Part-time and Temporary Full-time positions to approx. August 30, 2023

Hours:  Various rotating shifts (Scheduling will be determined based on unit needs and may include day/evening/night and weekend shifts)

Site: Oakville, Milton, Georgetown

The PT Extern role is a transitional role where PT students can gain clinical experience, specialty knowledge and self-confidence, as well as build on collaboration and communication skills. 

PT Externs are unregulated health care providers and function to enhance team dynamics and contribute to overall patient care.

Position Profile:

  • Provide support to the team by assisting with basic clinical tasks (i.e. Set up equipment, assist with wheelchair following patient) under the direct or indirect supervision of a registered OT/PT  
    • Assist with turning, repositioning and patient transfers using Lifts and other transfer devices (as 2nd person) 
    • Setting up equipment for Activities of Daily Living (ADL) 
    • Assist patient to enhance functional independence with ADLs (i.e. bathing, dressing) 
  • Answering call bells, addressing patient concerns where appropriate and advising OT/PT/nursing staff when assistance is required 
  • Supporting group exercise programs run by OT/PT or OTA/PTA (i.e. Cardiac rehab program, COPD program) 
  • Wiping down surfaces or therapeutic materials 
  • Transportation to the therapy gym if patient is already in a wheelchair  
  • Support individual exercise program (i.e. WorkFit)
  • Assist with modalities as delegated

Candidate Profile:

  • Physiotherapy students in any year of study of a training program accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC).
  • Completed recent clinical placement at Halton Healthcare preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to complete patient care tasks as directed
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with proven organizational skills
  • Excellent communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated confidence in knowledge, skills, judgement and ability to function in the team based model of care
